I found some Shell Rotella-t Synthetic 5-40wt in gallon containers for $19.99 gal. Since may SHP motor takes 6 quarts, I need 2 gallons or 3 gallons for 2 oil changes. So how long is it good for on the shelf?storage?
Ken, The debate on how long motor oils shelf life is depend on pretty much who you are talking to. Being in the Autoparts business 31 years I really never heard of any oil especially in quarts ever going bad. Think about it. The container is sealed and really no air can get to it. I mean it isn't food that we are talking about here. Oil is pumped out of the ground. As far as Synthetic Oil goes I would have to check that out for you since I have no idea on how it is made although I have been always curious to that. One of the oil suppliers that I deal with is a Shell Oil Supplier although they sell other brands along with the Shell Oil. I will ask them and let you know what they have to say about it.

Ken, After posting here for the heck of it I Googled the shelf life of Synthetic Motor Oil. I read that Exxon/Mobil claims the shelf life of there Synthetic Mobil I oil is 5 years. Reading a little bit more on the net someone made perfect sense to me as the person quoted: If Synthetic Motor Oil had a shelf life it would be noted on the bottle it was packed in just like Milk. That made a lot of sense to me because I never felt that regular Motor Oil had a shelf life. Heck I still have a couple of cases believe it or not of Valvoline All Climate 10/40 oil from back in the early 80's. I will tell you I have no intention of throwing it away. The only thing I would say is the additive package put in to todays oils is different then it was back then but I have no intention of using that oil in todays cars but will have no problem putting that oil in one of my Classic Cars today that called for it.

One of my concerns was that the oil is synthetic and chemicals may separate over a long period of time. I purchased 3 gallons of Rotella-T 5-40wt which will do 2 oil changes as I have a 5 qt pan and 1 for the filter. At $20 a gallon, I wanted to make sure it would not go bad for any reason. I also am going to try the Wix or Napa filter. I have used Fram forever and never had a problem but the guys on the other forum say that is a bad filter.
Ken, Since you just mentioned oil filters here I always felt that Purolator had one of the best oil filters on the market. From my 31 years of experience at selling them I never on my end saw or heard of a Purolator Filter ever causing a problem with an engine and I have sold them by the 10's of Thousands over that period I am sure.
One other thing don't forget that Purolator was the inventor of the very first oil filter for both cars and trucks. Purolator has also made oil filters since day one for GM, Ford and Chrysler. That may have changed some over the years as more competition from other oil filter manufacturers came about.

I have been doing my own oil changes for the past 30 years on all my cars, my kids cars, etc and never had a Fram filter give me a problem. But for some reason, I guess they are not very good. Maybe oil doesn't get along well with Fram? But I can't find the quart size in Fram as they only seem to stock the smaller sizes in the local parts store. But I also have a Napa store close to me so I will try them. Wix, Napa, Purolator, or whatever they have other than FRAM.
Ken, Too bad you don't live closer to me as I could of sold you Purolator at the wholesale cost. I have about 15 cases of Purolator Group 7 part number V4631. This is the larger Chevy filter to fit your car. A case of 12 would cost you $24.50.

That's too bad. You on the right coast, me on the left coast. Shipping would be nuts!
You are absolutely right. Shipping is killing a lot of business out there these days. I have warehouses that I deal with from out of state that can't ship me merchandise that I need because the shipping is killing the deal. Just a couple of months ago I purchased a pallet of Auto Parts from a warehouse in Nebraska. After shipping the Salesman told me that they were making about $30 on the whole deal as shipping was over $300.00 to ship the merchandise. I know this Salesman for better then 20 years. I know he is telling it like it is. He knows the writing is on the wall that they won't be able to ship me anymore soon.

That is why when I order Corvette parts for my 65 I have to wait and order several parts VS one or two. That way I don't pay more for shipping than the part cost. As you know, all the big Corvette parts vendors are in the Northeast, East, and Southeast. Sucks for us guys here in the West!
