Carburation

First of all I would like to welcome Danny Wolfe and his 1966 Corvette to the STS Corvette Forum.

Not very long ago Danny was looking for some answers as to what carburator he should look into to replace the one on his '66 Corvette Vert that he was having problems with. Most on another Corvette forum told him to go out and get himself a Edelbrock Carburator or to replace the one he had with an original remake by Holley an expensive proposition. Being I don't post on said forum anymore for various reasons I contacted Danny and gave him my advice and that was to replace his current carburator with a Holley Street Avenger. I did the same some 5 or so years ago and feel I did the best thing for my car. I have no complaints and the car runs great. It wouldn't take Holleys million mile warranty on their new power valve to convince me anymore today then it did back then to do the same if I ever had to. For a mere $300 back then I had a brand new Holley Street Avenger shipped right to my front door as I used the 670 cfm electric choke model on my car. Not wanting to sound like a commercial but Holleys Street Avenger is already flow tested at the factory and set up to basically just take it out of the box, mount it and drive. No monkeying around with really anything else especially if one knows nothing about carburation or how to adjust a Holley. My recomendation to Danny is the Holley Street Avenger period. It fits like a glove whereas if using an Edelbrock one will have problems fitting the factory air cleaner and breather tube to the air cleaner. Not with the Street Avenger as everything bolts right up and everything needed to make the switch comes in the box. thumbsup.gif

I have heard those are really good carbs. I personally don't know much about them. I have had great luck with the Edelbrock carbs. Seems you just bolt them down, start the motor, and you are off. Ok, maybe set the idle. I like the looks of the Holley way more. But I have never heard anyone complain about the Edelbrocks. I think I would try and get my original rebuilt just to keep the correct look, if not, that street avenger is one nice looking carb!

Ken,
There is really nothing wrong with a Elelbrock carburator maybe to use on something other then a C-2 Corvette that originally came with a Holley. On the '67 using an Edelbrock Carb you right away have a problem as the factory air cleaner will not fit properly. Not only that but by the way the Edelbrock Carburator is made as the body of it sits on the intake manifold across the motor from fender to fender whereas the Holley carb body sits on the intake manifold facing front to back of the engine with using the Edelbrock you right away have a problem trying to connect the breather tube from in back of the intake manifold to the factory air cleaner. I know I have been through this as I found this out to be true on my own car when I purchased it almost 7 years ago. When I received it the air cleaner was out of wack sitting on the brand new Edelbrock someone else put on the car before I received it. There was even a problem with the linkage as it didn't line up properly on the car because the body of the carb was different to the Holley that orignally came with the car.  I ended up selling that Edelbrock carb to someone wanting it on the other Corvette forum after purchasing a brand new Holley Street Avenger which clearly overcame those problems I just spoke about. For these 3 reasons alone I can not recommend a Edelbrock Carb to replace a factory Holley on a C-2. Have you priced a brand new Holley remake lately to match the orginal? Last I checked it was more then double the money a brand new Street Avenger would cost you. After seeing the difference in cost I chose the Street Avenger made with Holleys newest technology instead of going with old tech.
