Anyone using STP oil treatment in their older motors? Since I switched to Shell Rotella-T synthetic I have a slight knock during start-up that goes away in a couple minutes. Thinking of adding a bottle of STP oil treatment to thicken the viscosity a little. The Rotella is 5-40wt so a little thin. Thoughts?
Ken, You might only have a sticky lifter to deal with making that noise. There was a product out there years ago made by a company called (Siloo). This stuff worked wonders. If I remember correctly it was part #10a. Don't know if they are in business anymore though. Another good product still on the market is Marvel Mystery Oil. If it were me I would try a bottle. You can add it to your existing oil. It comes in the 4oz, pints, quarts and even gallons.
Years ago when these C-2's were brand new we use to use straight weight oil of 30w in the Summer and 20w in the winter. I still use regular motor oil in every vehicle I own including my collector cars. In the '67 I use Cam II 10/30 oil and in my '73 I have been using Vavoline 10/40 oil since I purchased it back in '82. There really isn't any need to use a synethic oil in your car and although you are using a multi-weight 5/40 the 5w part of it is very thin for your motor and may be your problem. Actually this oil is very thin all the time although the viscosity is suppose to be the same as a 40 weight oil. If it were me I wouldn't use that weight oil in my older car unless it called for it and your car doesn't call for it. I would go with a good 10/30,10/40 or even a 15/40 regular oil instead.
