Just wondering what Forum members might thinks about K&N filters and what I have done with them.
I have a 1973 Corvette 4 speed, small block with the stock air cleaner housing.
I am using a K&N 1450 filter which is the same dimensions as stock and a K&N 66-1201 Air Filter Assembly Top X-Stream Airflow that I modified to fit where the original filter lid goes,
For the 1973 air cleaner set up this is the best I could come up with to provide better air flow and still run the stock housing that seals to the hood. Motor is breathing better than it ever has.
With pictures it might better explain what I have. Started with Original lid 12" on top of round 12" X 2" filter
2nd try, flowed the best. Modified K&N 66-1101 11" Xstream air flow top black and K&N 1450 12" X 2" round filter.
What I am running now. Looks the best flows good and more sturdy than 66-1101 Modified K&N 66-1201 12" Xstream air flow top chrome and K&N 1450 12" X 2" round filter.
The stock air filter set up for the 1973 is very restrictive with just a 12" round filter thats only 2" tall. This setup was not engineered for flow but I do like the cowl induction for cooler air off the windshield. That why I spent the money and effort to improve the system. I think anyone with a 73 or 74 that wanted to keep the stock air cleaner assembly that seals to the underside of the hood could benefit using the x-stream top.
