Took The '67 Out Sunday And Almost Got Clipped

I finally got a chance to drive my '67 Coupe for the first time this year this past Sunday. Felt great to drive but within maybe 8 miles of driving while driving into my hometown someone who is sitting at a stop street decided to pull out right in front of me. Now there was someone a pretty good distance in front of me making a right hand turn. Maybe at first the driver also coming out from the right side might of not saw me but by the time I came close enough the former driver in front of me was well out of the way. Glad my brakes were in great shape because I had to slam them on as I came to stop in the intersection with this guys drivers side fender about midway into the street and me maybe 2 foot away. Not having A/C in my car of course my windows were down. I didn't curse but yelled out to the fellow driving that if he had hit my car he was looking at an expensive situation to be in. He just waved back like sorry or something. Heck if he couldn't see me I can't believe he didn't at least hear me with my loud SIDEPIPES.rage.gif

Glad you got out unscathed.  Our 97 got backed into in my office parking lot.  At least the lady came over to tell me - and that her soon-to-be-ex husband had cancelled the insurance the week before!

My vett is my daily driver about half the time .Ya have to be such a defensive driver like people are out to get ya.

If I still had a mid year or a C3  I'd have a nervous disorder.

Glad the 67 made it wink

Fred,

The very first mod I made to my 65 was addition of dual master power brakes with all new stainless braided lines, new pads, and rotors. Just because of the same thing you went through. Glad you made it untouched! smile

Now I am really glad I changed out the factory original 42 year old rotors in favor of 4 Brand New Raybestos made in USA rotors a couple of years ago. I actually purchased them because I saw the light that eventually I wouldn't be able to get USA made rotors for very much longer being everything under the sun is coming from China. Once sold out that would of been it.   Rebuilt a couple of SS Calipers that were leaking also at the same time. I can't complain about the power brakes in my '67 as they stop great. I wish my '73 had power disc over the standard discs it came with from the factory with.  They SUCK!

Try driving with drum brakes the same way - power or otherwise, discs do NOT suck (IMHO) aww

Sebring,
Right you are. Drum brakes suck even worse. My first car a '67 Firebird I purchased used in late '68 had drum brakes. I remember getting in a small accident with that car because I could not stop that car fast enough because of the manual not power drum brakes. I souped up the car putting in the famous Ram Air IV (400)motor out of a '70 GTO Judge that was wrecked and things were even worse. The Ram Air IV a big difference over the stock 326 made it even tougher to stop. We use to race on Rt.287 in New Jersey over the Rt.287 bridge that was a 1/4 mile long. Good bite for your tires being it was concrete if you were driving a Corvette at the time with street tires. The Firebird also sucked at getting traction being the crappy setup Pontiac gave the car having both shock absorbers mounted behind the axle where as Chevy in their Camaro mounted one in front of the axle and one in back of the axle staggering the shocks controlling wheel hop much better then Pontiac did. Anyway going South on Rt.287 you had a shorter distance to go to get the exit to come around to the other side of Rt.287 going North. Well let me tell you I could not stop for the exit going Southbound because of those crappy drum brakes. Buddies of mine that had Chevelles with power front disc and rear drums had no problem making the exit but that FireChicken could not do it. Had to drive another few miles to take the next exit to come back. no

Just one of the reasons I put discs on the front of the 57; I like to stop when necessary!

Sebring,

Good to know. Next time I am down to Sarasota and you throw me the keys like you did the last time I am going for a ride rather then hand you your keys back. biggrin

So, you're finally going to take advantage of my "momentary lapse of reason?" confuse

Nothing to worry about. It's not like once I am in it I will drive all the way back to Jersey. Heck I don't know if I can drive that far with the top down. jawdrop.gifrofl.gif

Hey by the way how is that new garage doing? You need to post some pictures here some time. I did see something you sent me at some point awhile ago with a link to your website showing pictures during the building of it. Don't know what ever happened to it. You are welcome to post pictures here or post a link as we have a picture section on the forum for our cars and what have you. Had to do that section a little different here but each member owns his own thread of pictures. Once you go there you will see what we did right away.
