Cash For Clunkers Program - - - - - Your Thoughts

As far as I am concerned I think the Cash for Clunkers program sucks. Not only is it that our tax dollars are paying for it but in my case being in the Auto Parts business I actually see this program hurting business's out there not only at the auto part stores but in the repair business at your local garage, repair centers and dealer repair. How is that suppose to stimulate the economy? Some perfectly good cars that need a little work are being traded in to be put to rest. These are cars that could of been repaired and used by say your teenager who is purchasing their first car and couldn't afford much more or by lower income families who can not afford a brand new car. Just curious to your thoughts on this one. I don't see any stimulation here except for new car manufacturing paid for by us the taxpayer and our local communities.no

I totally agree. I'd rather see the government help fix the clunkers so they don't pollute as much. All it's doing is bailing out the auto makers and dealers and creating new loans for buyers. Now you have people buying new cars for the deal instead of the need. Bet car repossession goes up significantly!

First ,and I could be wrong but I don't know of any dealers that have gotten their money from the Gov't.

As a libertarian I'm a firm believer that all Gov't programs a flawed and mis-managed .

Got to help the oil companies and if they can get people in more fuel efficient cars then people will not feel the hit as hard when big oil raises gas cost.

Which has very little regulation and the price is set by speculation.

Plus it hurting the used car dealers. I also heard the $4500 rebate is just the beginning of the total cost which ends up costing something like three or four times more than the $4500. Typical  Government program they say it will only cost so mush and help so many people.  But when reality hits it costs a whole lot more and does not help as many people.

Their politicians not business people, if Government was a business it would have gone out of business alone time ago.

I Think it sucks too. The vehicles that are traded are not recycled back in to parts, they are disabled and shredded...recycled into Chinease junk. I saw a video where a pretty nice looking late '90's Caddy was driven into the dealership, they drained the engine oil, loaded it with some kind of silicone crap, ran it until it froze the motor, and then shredded it.

No parts were removed and resold to someone who can't afford a new car, but needs an alternator or steering wheel to fix thier car so they can get to work...just shredded...

Something about purposly detroying a big engine car...or big block truck just bothers me...that could have been my future project!!

I also agree with what has been said. A lot of nice decent cars that needed little work crushed and going to China ! Only in AMERICA !! The only one's making out is the dealers and auto Co's which is why they did it. The Magestic BIG THREE ( Ford is the exception here ) taxpayer bailout. Our money. I hate to say this but I'm glad I am the age that I am now (65) because I don't like what I see in the future.   Dixie
