Gene Culley from GM Parts House Dot Com did me a big favor this weekend. Gave him the Vin Number to my C-5 and he was able to track everything that was ever done to my car. Hope I am reading it correctly being it looks like the car went into the dealer twice for the Column Lock Recall and apparently GM took care of the problem. Funny but I have done plenty of reading on the problem and from what I read they claim even the recall GM performed didn't correct the problem and that it will still eventually happen. Well as mentioned in another thread I did purchase a CLB and I guess I will just keep it in the back compartment just in case unless I feel the need to redo what GM did and just install it. Take a look below at the information Gene sent me on Sunday and tell me if you feel I am reading all info correctly.

To be honest with you Vett Boy I still don't know what I am doing. I did purchase the CLB as I am waiting for it to be delivered but don't know what to do at this point. I may just sit on the CLB. Do you read the info presented like I am reading it.? The info shows that both column lock recalls on my vehicle are closed. Does that mean it was taken care of on my car? Its confusing being if you look further below it shows when my car was in for servicing going back to 2001 up to 2005 and it is for different issues. Doesn't show the Column Lock work being done there.

Looks like the report has different sections for different actions; ie warranty (or owner-initiated) and "campaign" (required/recall) issues.
So Sebring what are you trying to say? Do you think the Column Lock problem was fixed on my car at the dealer because what I am reading makes me wonder? I am only guessing that the work was done based on seeing the word Closed in the Status section. What say you?

I say "Closed" = Done. (Notice I didn't say "fixed")
Sebring you are a peace of work but I like your thinking.
I guess I will just sit on the CLB until I need it.

It looks to me that the person who owned the car in July of 2001 brought it in with the lock problem and the dealer thought they fix it so they closed the trouble ticket.
Then the owner of the car in April 2004 (same person??) brought it in when they got the GM recall notice?

Funny I thought GM disengaged the column lock as a fix from what I have read about this problem. I can still hear my column actually lock on my C5. I get hear the pin slide in and the steering wheel does not move giving me the reason to think that maybe I will still eventually have a problem down the road. Been getting a lot of thumbs up when driving this car from people walking along the street or driving by in their cars or pickup trucks. Always had plenty of compliments with my older Vettes and Street Rod but I have to say I am very surprised with this C5. Nice looking car but there are so many of them around anymore.
Message To Sebring Bill: Bill do me a favor and see if you can move your steering wheel on your C5 with the key in the off position. Just curious to see if your Column lock is still working being GM fixed you problem.

Sebring my guess is your car has a automatic transmission in it. From what I read now they disconnected the column lock on C5 Corvettes with auto trans being the auto trans supposely locks so no one can steal it. With the manual trans there was no way to do the same so the Fed gave GM the ok on the Auto Trans cars but not on the manual trans cars.

Are you saying you have a 6 speed and your column when the key is off will turn right and left? Don't know how a Chevy dealer was able to that for you but better yet. According to what I have read dealers didn't get authorization to do that on manual trans cars.

Dat's what I got! Had to have the 97 flatbedded to the dealership when the column lock pooped. They had it for a day and a half and I've been driving it since. Don't have the date of service handy but I think I could find the receipt if ya want.
