Went trout fishing today at a small lake in the Sierras. About 6,000 foot level. Was about 80 degrees out and the smell of the pines was awesome. Fished the lake for about 5 hours and caught 4 good size rainbows. All between 14-16". Since I retired I have gone fishing 5 or 6 times and loving it. Fished a lot when I was a boy and before I got married. My wife is a city girl so she hates bugs and won't go anywhere that doesn't have cement or a fine hotel. Went by myself and I will need to find a fishing buddy. Ya need to have someone to talk to and have a few beers or some wine with.
In my mind's eye, I can see the beauty you described. I'd love to see it!! I've never seen the Sierras, but I have that trip on my bucket list.
I kinda agree with your wife, although, I'm not a city girl, by any stretch of the imagination. I hate living in Atlanta (aka Concrete Jungle), but it beats the heck out of being buried here. Bugs give me the creeps, and I can't take a fish off of a hook, cuz' I don't want to hurt them...but I'd sure like to kick back with a bottle or two of wine and enjoy the scenery.
Did you take a camera on your fishing trip? Any pictures?
Bud has posted some breathtaking pictures of the Kern River & surrounding area. That trip is on my bucket list too...as is downing a pitcher of beer with Jones (Redwing).
Life is short. Enjoy the beauty of God's awesome grace.

Took some with my cell phone. Now have to figure out how to load them onto my computer!
When we do our road trip to Ken's place we'll go fishin'
Yeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That'll be BIG fun, but you're gonna have to bait my hook...and take the fish off the line....and clean 'em...and cut 'em up....and fry 'em. And clean up the mess.

Ken get a little pocket camera, mines a Fuji Finepix $50.00 e-bey.
My Nikon was $1,200 but I never carry it.
Getting photos off of the cell phone can be done but I don't know how to to it and the qaulity of the photos really suffer.
Ken does your Cell Phone except a Memory Card in the side of it? My LG phone does. Some Cell Phones only have the memory inside that came with the phone and no slot for a Micro SD Card. In other words what I am trying to say if you do have a slot on the side of your phone for the Micro SD Memory Card as my phone has even if you have pictures already downloaded into the phones memory as my phone has both phone memory and the slot for a Memory Card once you put the card into your phone you can transfer those Digital pictures from the phones memory to the card. My card comes with an adapter and is a Kingston 1GB MicroSD Memory Card. 1GB holds more pictures then I will ever take with my cell phone. You just take the micro card out of your phone after installing it and doing a transfer and then put it in the adapter and then put it in one of the slots made for it on your PC and your PC will upload all of your cell phone digital pictures that you want. What I did with my phone was eliminate the phone factory memory so that every picture I take or mini video with my cell phone goes directly to the Micro Card all the time anymore. Its really not that hard to do this so don't be discouraged. If you have the extra slot go out and purchase a card. They are really cheap anymore. Probably set you back about $6-8 dollars. First check that you have the slot for it in your phone. Any questions just ask Ken.
By the way Ken I use to like to fish many years ago. I got less then 1-1/2 years to go and I am putting in at 62. If you were out this way you would of had a fishing partner. I am still going to work my business part time but I don't plan to bust my ass in the process. I will be doing a lot of picking and choosing by then as to whether the sale is worth the trouble at that point or not. I am basically semi-retired right now especially with this terrible economy there is not much business to be had out there now anyway. Plenty of customers want to charge merchandise but not many want to pay for it when it is time. Just looking for my SS at 62 to pay for most of my very high N.J. Property Taxes thats it.

Why would you stay in New Jersey? The taxes are only going to get worse.
Then theres the rough winters, all that traffic, high crime, drug dealers forever.
You'd be surprized at how much more peaceful a small rural town with low taxes is.
Eventually after you begin selling assets, you realize that you can't afford New Jersey anymore.
Imagine living on 40% of what you're use to getting.
Kern County California is as cheap as it gets and this county is larger than your state.
My property taxes go to Kern County who blows the money on new cars and furniture, what a waste.
The governor of Montana never rasied state taxes, he just cut back on state spending. After 4 years in office the state had a surplus of $400,000,000.
New Jersey will never have a surplus, New Jersey is state spending.
I wouldn't live anywhere but California and its one of the worst run states in the states. But when the government gets out of control "We the People" change things.
The governor Grey Davis (D) got out of control he was "recalled"...and replaced by Arne.
Think about it, but Florida sucks.......the summers are horrible........

Redwing I have no idea of where I am going to be down the road. I have almost 8 years on my wife which will cause a problem from what I can see being she wants to keep her job. I guess I can't blame her in case somthing were to happen to me. With the job situation and the economy out there you most certainly have to have some sort of health insurance. I am covered by her companys health insurance plan. If she was to lose her job it may be a different story but until things get better out there I am not about to make any moves. Still have my 89 year old mother living here also in a nursing home so that also keeps me here in N.J.. Can't say we haven't been thinking of getting out at some point down the road as we do see the writing on the wall.

Yep, where to go? I've lived in Maryland, Orygun, El Paso Texas, New Mexico, California, most of the big cities..
California is hard to beat as long as the town isn't any bigger than 3,500 people.
But big government is ruining everywhere.
I like the 4 seasons, snow, cold nights, I've have no wife, no children, no family, so I can live anywhere that I can afford.
My family lives in New Mexico and Texas, but I don't like being a minority.
A woman wouldn't like it here, no shopping for 50 pairs of shoes.
I don't fish, I don't hunt, no boat, don't ski, I like the lake and the river, but just to look at.
I like the clean air, the High Sierras, the lack of people most of all.
Peace and quite, I only have the one nieghbor and he shot at his best friend over $10.00 I'm praying that he gets hit by a meteor.
Well, ya can't have it all.
If you ever get the itch check out Ruidoso New Mexico. Low taxes, 4 seasons, stunning views, few people.
