Quiet down those loud sidepipes.....

I will be shipping my sidepipes to another Corvette guy in Tacoma, Washington so he can cut them open, add some glass packing, fabricate new outer material to put them back together so I will have that mellow glass pack sound instead of the deafening loud sipepipe sound. Did the crossover which helped but needs more! I will post some more info when I get them back. I will also try and add a sound bite of the new sound.

Ken,
My side pipes on my '67 aren't bad (sound just right) as I think they are the factory originals. I have heard plenty complain about the replacement aftermarket pipes they are selling today. They definitely don't seem to be made the same for how loud they are. I know the last set of pipes I purchased a few years ago for one of my garage customers to my auto parts business for his Corvette are much louder then mine. The glass packing will definitely make a difference as I am sure there is glass packing in the C-3 Side Pipes. The factory Side Pipes (69' Factory Side Exhuast) on my '73 are half as loud as the factory side exhaust pipes on my '67.

Ken, Let us know how you make out with yours once you get them back.

Quiet Sidepipes....such a thing?

Well, my sidepipes are off to Washington to get fiberglass insulation. I have the Allen's 2 3/4" OD sidepipes and I am tired of them being way too loud so a Corvette friend in Washington State will be removing a portion of the outer shell, wrapping the inner baffles with fiberglass, and welding on a new larger diameter shell. The pipes will grow to 3 1/2" OD and have a deeper, more mellow tone like glass packs. Can't wait!

Ken,
I merged your lastest thread on (Quiet Sidepipes....such a thing?) into your previous thread about the same subject (Quiet down those loud sidepipes....).

Well, have installed the new glass-pack side-pipes and they sound really nice. About 25-35% quieter than the 2 3/4" Allen's which are now 3" glass-packs. I took a video with sound but the file is too big (148MB) so I can't load it anywhere. I will try to adjust my camera to use a lower resolution and post the pics and sound tomorrow. Not cheap to do, $300 plus shipping to Washington. But if you are tired of that annoying chambered sound, it works along with a H or crossover pipe.

Ken, Your car sounds just right through my computer speakers. I am pretty sure my pipes on the '67 are the factory originals that sound just right to me. Much louder then the factory pipes on my '73 though but just right. I know what you are talking about as far as LOUD C-2 pipes go because I ordered a complete C-2 set of aftermarket pipes from Corvette America for a garage customer of mine a few years back who adapted them to his '76 Corvette for the old look but those pipes are just too, too loud for some reason. He never complains about them though and it does sound good when he is coming down the road with his car.

Yep, I have heard the large Allen's are louder than the Sweet Thunders or Originals. I could not hardly drive the car with the windows up. Seems with them down it was not as bad. Now I can rut them up and actually hear!

Good god I hope you are wrong! I have the Allens 2.5" going on the 64. I guess I could quiet them down if need be?

Just make sure you at minimum do a cross-pipe to equal the pressure. That takes some of the bark out but will not make them any quieter.

Here are a couple of pics of the pipes after Dave sent them back. The main pipe is 2 1/2" and you can see the Allen's welded first are 2 3/4" and then what Dave added making them 3 " OD.
