Engine Compartment Temperature


I installed duel Spals a couple of years ago on my 73 with a 400 CID that likes to make heat. I have found during the summers when driving down the road the coolant temperature is 185 F when I stop at a light or driving slow in traffic the coolant temperature raises to 200 to 210 F. I think this is due to angle of the radiator and the electric fans mounted against the radiator that are blowing air under the oil pan and not back over the motor as the stock fan set up would causing engine compartment temperature to rise when stopped or moving slow. I am going to try to alleviate this problem of engine compartment temperature rise by installing a 4 fan by the location where the vapor canister is on the drivers side and running 4 duct up under the master cylinder for intake and exhaust the air at the rear of the lower fender shield. It will come on when the Spals start and will be actuated by the same temperature switch. I have it all mounted and will try it out this weekend.

With the three C-3 Corvettes that I have owned I never had a problem with overheating whether it was the 427-435HP '69 Coupe I had or the '72 that I once had and the '73 Coupe that I still have. All ran cool on the hottest days with absolutely no problem whatsoever. Now I did have a problem with my C-2 '67 Coupe with a overheating issue. Actually the person who owned the car before me installed an electric fan with a manual switch under the dash. I couldn't understand why when I first bought the car 7 years ago. For the first few years of ownership I did not find the problem until I  finally tackled the problem a couple of years ago.. Believe it or not the problem was a perfectly good looking Radiator cap that went bad. Replaced it with one off the shelf in my parts business and I was good to go.

Now the problem I was having was that while driving my car it would run nice and cool but on very warm days and even some semi-cool days when I would shut the car down say at a Cruise night or arriving at a Car show the car would puke up anti-freeze on the ground and have a perculating sound inside the system. Well now today it runs as cool as can be. I don't even need the electric fan anymore although I left it attached since I am to lazy to pull the hood off to get to it. I figure it isn't hurting anything so I left it be. biggrin

200 F to 210 F on 90 to 100 F or above days I do not think is too bad considering the motor I have along with running the AC. I would just like it to run a little cooler. I am also going to install a Dewitts A73M Aluminum Radiator for another upgrade for cooling the motor.

Just wanted to see if pulling the heat out of the engine compartment had any effect overall.

The fan I installed will pull 250 CFM, the fan housing is 4 dia X 5.75 long

Years ago I had a Datsun 280Z that had a similar fan to remove hot air from under the hood. Probably to keep the fuel injection cooler. Not sure if it did any good but the idea was good I think?

It was 91F here Saturday I drove the car and monitored the engine compartment temperature. The surface temperature of the hood dropped by 20F and the engine cooled much faster. I think I will leave the fan on for now.

Can you take a pic of how you set it up? Good reason why some electric fans use a temp control so it continues to run after the motor is shut off. And until it reaches a certain temp.

I am still in the process to find the optimum spot for the suction side of the duct.Started with it under the master cylinder right now I have it at the drivers side of the master cylinder closer to the under side of the hood. A 10 F degree difference.  After I am satisfied with location of the intake placement. I am going to remove the entire setup and install new 4 duct paint it up and reinstall. During the initial installation I beat up the 4 aluminum duck a little. It not pretty but will be. When I start the final version I will take pictures of the process
