Went to wash the car yesterday and a lug nut was missing ,then I looked closer and the stud was broke off WTF I checked my torque wrench and it was fine .So I loosened all the lug nuts on all the wheels ,using the proper sequence I tightened each lug nut to 80 lbs then up to 100 .Every things fine till I get to the left front and I snap off another one next to the one that broke .It broke off at 80 lbs .
So today -----off we go to the dealer .I called my buddy at AAA and he'll pick it up on a flat .I'da driven it with one lug missing but not two.
The broken stud that I have looking at the break it looks carbonated .That meaning the tensile strength could be so high that it was brittle .
I never used a torque wrench ever on my wheels and never in my life broke a stud. Knock on wood. When using my air gun you can basically have a feel for it when to stop the gun. Most of the time on my collector cars especially my vehicles with a alloy rim I just hand tighten them with a 4 way lug wrench as to not take a chance to mess up the Chromed nuts. You might be better off next time picking up a large 4 way lug wrench and hand tightening them instead by feel rather then what the torque wrench tells you. I have seen too many garages out there over tighten these nuts and eventually break the studs.

I torque alloy wheels at 80. Most shops will go 100 but that scares me. I have had broken studs before because shops either cross thread or over torque. You go to take them off and the stud breaks. Never lost a lug in so many years of driving when torqued at 80.

I grew up on a farm and we have a bunch of construction equipment .I've never broken a stud in my life .The dealership said I stretched the treads by using lithium grease on the studs.Yes I did but it was a film to prevent corrosion that was forming .GM does specifically state 100 lbs of torque and the process to get it.I'm going to change all the studs in the next few weeks ,frigg it .The dealer might be right but it's hard for me to believe.
Thanks ,great news though .They called from the dealer said they changed 3 studs and GM wouldn't cover the cost because there was grease film on the studs .They said all of 'em needed to be changed before the car was driven .I told them I'd take the chance and what is the bill --$232.13 .Bargain ! thats about $77 each .Lets see 20 x$77 thats only $1540 .God it's Monday and my azz hole smarts from just three .But I smiled as I paid them .Stopped by my friendly auto parts store and picked up 20 for $51.87 .I've got a real good mechanic that will help me out this week .I figure 3hrs @$50 ,thats about $200 total .Thats less than the dealer changing three. Wow do I feel great

Bet when they figured the labor time they did it separately for each stud VS they already have the caliper and wheel off. Not sure how they arrived at $232.13 but I bet their internal cost including labor was about $100 or less. I hate dealerships. I have a mechanic that works for about half the price when I need him.
I realize that dealerships have a high overhead and they need to make money but it just seems over the top .Not that it matters but it should have been under warranty .
I was going to sell my 08 and look at a 2011 grand sport but now I'm not sure .I'm going to start to research the Lotus Elise ,it's in the same price range .That is if I'm not broke in 2011
