1965 was a bad year here in the "Golden State", 1st year for California smog controls on CA cars. The completely reliable cars of the early 60's became cranky, unreliable under powered, gas hogs, thanks to state and federal law.........
1973 was the gas shortage crisis which was a boon to the merging Japanese car makers and the eventual end of the big 3.
1980 was the last of the good years. Reason no cell phones, no internet, no GPS, no computers, no DVD's, no wars, a much smaller governemnt, no sat tv's, no flat screens, no digital slr's, no problems.
But by the mid 1980's it was all over.........the digital age was on us and we've never been the same since.
I got a new LG CU920 touch screen phone, unlocked of course, it came with a book. A book, a phone came with a BOOK........a 66 page BOOK........
It does everything, from tv, to internet, to playing games, conference calls, its a learning process just to insert the battery and the SIM card.
You have to learn what locked vs unlocked means, what a SIM card is, not to mention charging rates, how to text, set ring tones, how to make a call, who to use the 2mp camera, how to send photos, how to access the interent, and on and on, did I mention that it came with a BOOK a 66 page BOOK..............
This is a 3G phone, just imagine the size of the book that a 4G comes with.........
Its rediculous and without my Franlin digital "wordmaster" I couldn't even spell rediculous...........
When I was a kid growing up in San Diego Ca, we didn't have the following in the house, no phone, no fridge, it was an ice box, every few days one of the nieghhood favorites the "Ice Man" would bring in the block of ice for the ice box.
No dryer, we had a wash machine with a ringer and a solar clothes dryer, in those days it was called a clothes line. No tv not many had on right after WW2.............
I didn't see "television" tell I was in the 2nd grade. We did'nt have any fast food places, nobody did, no fat kids either, we placed in front of the apartment house everyday after school till the "street lights: came on.
Every kid on the block got along......no fights, just playing hide and seek, flag, kick the can, no real toys we made our toys, some bought, but we "recycled" most of our old toys in something else, wore out shoe stakes, got nailed to a 2x4 and it became a "skate board" with a handle bar........
No cell phones that came with a BOOK................
I miss those days. Played Cowboy & Indians, had the little plastic army men, dirt clod wars, tree forts, and all kinds of street games. We lived at the end of a court so cars were not an issue. Rode our bikes for miles and miles. Skate board was a 2x4 with an old skate nailed to the bottom. Lawn mower had no motor, only a person to push it. Radio was great, war of the worlds on the radio was fantastic. Wish my kids could have experienced those days. Never sat around, always doing something. You are right, no fat kids back then, no fast food until McDonald's opened.
I gotta agree with you, Bud. '76-'80 was the best! I graduated high school in 1980, and then life really began.
When I was in HS, my idea of getting away was to ride my bike the 17 miles from my parents house through Shelby Forest and on down to the Mississippi river. I'd roll a doob or two and be gone all day (literally and figuratively speaking). I was never worried about being abducted or run over by a car. Heck, now we're not even safe in our own homes.
We used to play kickball under the street lights...and we KNEW we'd best not be late getting home. We lived in a wonderful neighborhood where all of us kids were friends...our parents were all friends, and we always said "yes ma'am/sir...no ma'am/sir, please and thank you". If the kickball rolled into Mr. Thornton's yard, we'd knock on his front door and ask permission to retrieve it. We played football every Saturday morning...I always got sacked and had the wind knocked out of me more times than I can remember. It embarrassed me and I came up swingin'! (no, I wasn't a girly-girl...)
I worked two jobs while I was in high school, but never felt stressed. They were simpler times....and they are gone forever. I miss them **sniffle, sniffle**
Speedie, ya'll never call............besides I have 2 cells and a land line and my phone nevers rings, when it does I don't know which one to answer.....but just in case it does I wouldn't want to miss a call.. Last time that I talked to another human being was 8 months ago, but I don't think that I'm missing anything.
My dogs never say anything but they never bitch at me iether.......and they never demand me to take them to town..... But call away, I'm here 24-7-365...........

Pfffft!!!!!!! We talked a couple of months ago, and when I tried to reach you a few weeks later, my call went to voicemail.
BTW....I STILL haven't found the Danion Brinkley book. I've gone every place I can think of, but no luck. I really don't want to order off the i'net, but if that's my only option, then so be it.
