C-5 Column Lock Recall

Being I am still new to my C-5 I was just wondering if any other C-5 owners on this forum had the Steering Lock recall done on their car over the years? I have no idea if it was ever done on mine. I haven't had any problem as of yet but I have the feeling that it can happen at any time and I don't want to get stuck anywhere and have to be towed in. Don't even know if GM would honor the recall on my car being it is now 11 years old.

We had it done on our 97 a few years ago - after the damn thing locked up and I had to have it flatbedded to the dealership.  As far as I know that was an actual recall so you should be able to have your local dealer check the VIN# to determine whether your car was "fixed."  If not, it should be done at no cost to you.  Natalie (my assistant) had her 2000 coupe "fixed" a coupla months ago - no charge.

Good advice ,I think that GM has a site that you plug in your vin number and it gives you all your up dates .

Also and I'd hate to send anyone to another forum but "Corvette Mechanic " which is a forum has extensive info on Column lock issues .They are knowledgeable technicians but a little starchy.

My 03 I installed a column lock bypass when I first got it .

I've been a CM member for years (before the latest "upgrade" lost most of the member's join dates) and I've found the site most helpful and friendly.  It does lean more towards the more technical/mechanical stuff...

Looked all over the net but can't find the GM Site for plugging in my Vin Number. Trying to avoid calling my local dealer who I don't really care for but if I have no choice I will eventually do so. Was just hoping to avoid it by contacting GM first.

I found the GM website I was looking for. For anyone else interested here is the link: http://www.gm.com/gmownercenter/gm/?campaignId=&vin

When I signed up it already had info on me from way back in 1988 when I purchased a new Monte Carlo LS for my wife back then. It shows on that website that there were no recalls on my C5. Showed a big fat zero. That was hard for me to believe. Anyway I found out more and more about the Column Lock Recall after much research over the last few weeks. Actually watched 2 video's made by a GM engineer to the problems associated with the Column Lock issue. He claims that 88% of the problem is associated with the C-5 battery where people replaced them with the wrong size battery over the years and from the point of many C-5's sitting for a long period of time where the battery has drained some. He claims that the electronics on the C-5 in the Column lock assembly need a specific voltage at all times or the lock will not move freely in the system and could stop half way and lock the steering system if the battery isn't up to snuff.

After reading much and seeing this video I decided to purchase a CLB (Column Lock Bypass) from Corvette's of Houston $49.95 w/free shipping on Ebay. The CLB put into the system is suppose to fool the column lock into believing all is well at all times eliminating any problems that could occur with a semi drained battery. In other words say you have to jump your car being the battery is low. The Column lock if initiated already would not move being the split second you turn the key it would not have the power it should have in the system to operate properly. The CLB should eliminate that from ever happening.
