Need a small cheap car

Looking for a small car prefer American .I'm going to use this as a get around car for a year or so and then pass it on to my grandson.I'm thinking Ford Focus a couple years old .VW TDI ,Corolla .The problem is what I see on the used market isn't that much less than  cheap new .I want something that will get 34 mpg or better highway .4dr

In 2005 we bought a new Ford Focus for our son and daughter as they were just getting their licenses. Got a great deal out the door for about 15K and it was fully loaded. We still have the car and use it for running errands and as a back-up for our daily drivers. My son has beat the heck out of it and we have not spent a penny on it other than tires. I do all oil changes. It's been a great car. It is the 4 door SE sedan with the 2.3 motor. Auto transmission, power everything. When we bought it we were thinking of just keeping it for a year or two. But it's hard to sell it when it costs nothing to drive and is so reliable.

Theres no such thing as a good cheap car.......
VW, I worked in a VW shop for 15 years, they're shizt cars.
Toyota same thing, shizt cars.
The Ford Focus is a good car but they're not cheap.

Look for a Volvo 240 D. Or a Mercedes diesel.
If you want a good dependable car look for a Buick..........

I'm really tending toward the Focus SE .I have a Corvette friend that is semi retired and works at a local auction house .I might be able to find one with 30,000 miles and a couple years old.I think I'd have a hard time buying foreign  plus parts should be more available at a reasonable price.

What are you getting for fuel mileage??
